Welcome Home Daddy Love, Lexi (Written by Florenza Denise Lee; Illustrated by Maria Guevara)
There are costs associated with being a military family; costs many civilians may never be able to comprehend. These costs cannot be measured with dollars or cents, they are measured with the heart. This beautifully told story highlights the unwavering relationship between a Service Member and his daughter. Although the branch of service mentioned in the US Army, the story is applicable to all branches of the service, Veteran, Retiree, and civilian families alike.
Welcome Home is the first of several books in the, "Hi, I am..." Book Series. This book series highlights the love, joy, pride, obstacles, and challenges our military families encounter each and every day. Welcome Home Daddy, Love Lexi is a beautiful story about a little girl's love and pride for her Daddy who is a soldier.
When Lexi was a baby, and too young to remember, her dad deployed. When he receives orders to deploy again, Lexi is old enough to fully understand what this means.
To encourage Lexi during the deployment, her mom helps her stay in contact with her dad by writing letters, cards, talking on the phone, and video-chatting. This helps until they receive a phone call that changes everything. After this call, Lexi's mom informs her that dad will be returning home early, but will return differently than he left. Lexi doesn't understand what "differently" means, she is just excited knowing her daddy is returning.
Lexi isn't interested in gifts, cards, or letters; all she wants is for her daddy to come home and hear her say, "Welcome Home, Daddy!"
Although written with military families in mind, this book is applicable to any parent, caregiver, educator alike as it allows the reader to navigate the listener through emotions such as sadness, joy, anxiety, happiness, and yes, fear. The book contains conversation starters by Dr. Endora Crawford who specializes in trauma recovery.
